What Do Women Most Desire?

The Kennedy White House was famously mythologized as “Camelot.” This work reaches back to another Arthurian story: Chaucer’s The Wife of Bath’s Tale, where the answer to the question “What do women most desire?” is sovereignty.

Here, Camelot becomes an American costume drama. JFK wears Uncle Sam as performance — hat, beard, patriotic disguise — caught between Liberty and Justice, with desire, duty, image, and consequence all perched on his shoulders.

Playful at first glance, the portrait gathers charm, scandal, glamour, and anxiety into a single uneasy grin. Beneath the satire is the older answer: Liberty and Justice are not ornaments around power. They are the claims power must answer to.

They ask not to be admired, possessed, flattered, or performed.

They ask for sovereignty.
